Rescue & Rehabilitation

On a typical day, PFA rescues at least four animals from the streets. For PFA, a rescue often marks the beginning of a life-long commitment. An animal taken under our wing is permanently cared for and watched over. Rescues mostly involve;

• Abandoned pets that are aged or suffering from debilitating or chronic ailments such as heart defects, hip dysplasia, epilepsy, ear infection, infected wounds etc.
• Animals injured in road accidents
• Animals with severely maggot infested wounds
• Neglected or abused pets and working animals
• Animals that have been illegally detained
• Orphaned or abandoned puppies and kittens

We house the rescued animals in our rescue shelter and give them medical treatment, food and care. They are helped to overcome the trauma and reinstate their trust in man. After recovery, the animals are rehabilitated. Healthy young pets are given away as family pets through adoption. Disabled and aged animals that need constant care have a permanent home at the shelter. Feral animals that make a full recovery are released into the locality from which they were rescued.

Adoption Programs

• We promote a pet culture involving Indian Breeds, to preserve our wonderful native dogs and as a remedy to the increasing number of homeless and feral population.
• We offer incentives such as free vaccination and sterilization as part of our campaign for Indian dogs.
• Many orphaned puppies and kittens reach us every day. They are looked after and socialized to be loving pets.
• PFA organizes Adoption Drives at Shanghumugham beach every week, to find loving homes for healthy puppies and kittens that are more than 45 days old.
• We also follow up on the well being of all the pets that got adopted through PFA adoption drives.

Vaccination Camps

PFA organizes free outreach anti rabies vaccination and medical camps in different parts of the city on a regular basis. These camps extend to pet animals as well as stray animals. Through these camps, we encourage, educate and help the public to maintain the health of their pets and other animals in the vicinity.

Animal Birth Control (ABC) Program

Animal Birth Control is the only viable and humane solution to counter the ever increasing population of stray dogs and subsequent threats to human beings and livestock. If the dogs in an area are killed or removed, dogs in surrounding areas will move in to occupy the space. The new dogs reproduce and replenish the population. Hence, killing or relocating stray dogs is not a viable solution. PFA strongly advocates the sterilizing of pets and stray animals. Spaying prevents aggression, migration and territorial fights. Spaying also protects dogs from some serious diseases like mammary as well as testicular tumor and pyometra. Sterilized animals live healthier and longer. Sterilized friendly street dogs have been proven to serve as community pets and good watchdogs for the locality.

Crusade against Cruelty

Ahimsa is paramount to our world view, yet millions of animals are tortured, abused, neglected, mutilated, exploited or killed every year. Though cruelty to animals is a criminal offence, related incidents go unnoticed as animals cannot protest or expose their plight. This leads to open flouting of laws protecting animals. The victims have only one ally - people who would not look on and walk away while they suffer in silence; people who are sensitive towards their plight and willing to fight for their cause, and we are that. PFA fights cruelty to animals in an organized and sustained way. Our network of volunteers and supporters keep eyes and ears open for any incident of animal cruelty or animal law violation, speak for the animal and ensure retribution and justice.

• We check on pet shops and have many times reported illegal sale of wild life.
• We save neglected and abused animals and do our best to bring the perpetrator to justice.
• We file complaints to respective police stations and the Forest Dept in cases of ill treatment and violation of laws.
• We involve the judiciary to rescue the victims of abuse.
• We conduct public demonstrations and protests against activities, rituals or sports involving animal cruelty.
• We organize campaigns and seek public support for our causes through social media and other channels.

Awareness Programs

Our bigger goal of educating the society and creating an animal friendly environment is fulfilled by regular awareness programs on different animal welfare issues. Our target audience includes mostly school and college students, professionals and the general public. We conduct school based education programs, cycle rallies, dog training programs, Living Free awareness campaigns and so on to spread our message of animal welfare far and wide.
